Relationship and Sex Education

Curriculum Statement

A rich RSE curriculum builds upon the prior experiences of our children and their curiosity about the world around them. Through our RSE curriculum, we want our children to develop the skills to make and maintain positive relationships with others. Additionally, we want them to learn and appreciate the wonder of human growth, change and reproduction. Through our RSE curriculum, we aim to develop in our children high self-esteem and instil respect for themselves and others. Underpinning our curriculum is the knowledge of God’s great love for us and our own uniqueness.

‘A Journey in Love’ is the RSE scheme (Relationship and Sex Education) that we use at St. Hugh’s Catholic Primary School.  It is a resource created by Sister Jude Groden of BRES. It is the recommended programme of study for Catholic schools for Relationship and Sex Education, and has been written as a progressive scheme of work that supports the Religious Education, PSHE and Science curricula taught within the school.  The programme of study is authentic to the teaching of the Catholic Church.

At the heart of Christian faith is love. This means that we have to link every aspect of our being, from birth to death, with love. The ‘Journey in Love’ programme has, at its source, the belief that we are made in the image and likeness of God.

A Journey in Love

In each year group, an aspect of the mystery of love is explored. The children are encouraged to marvel at the wonder and beauty of God’s love. They take part in a series of tasks, activities and reflections which focus on physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual development.

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from the non-statutory component of sex education in Year 6.  This is where sexual intercourse is taught discretely as part of the Physical aspect within Journey In Love.

Withdrawal requests should be made in writing and addressed to the Exexecite headteacher.

Parents do not have the right to withdraw their children from Statutory Relationships Education as set out in the DFE guidance 2020.

RSE is taught in each year group in the Spring term. In December, we invite parents into school to discuss the RSE curriculum. This is a forum where parents can ask questions and share any concerns which they might have.
